TACLOBAN CITY WORTH A VISIT
TACLOBAN A CITY WORTH
A VISIT
What a great improvement three years post Typhoon Yolanda. There
appears to be a good amount of investment in the Tacloban area. New hotels,
restaurants and various new businesses. I have noticed an increase in foreign
visitors. Some I presume are tourists and others involved in charity and
ongoing aid work. In addition there are many Filipinos visiting as tourists and
to visit family. The airport has greatly improved and my hope one day it
becomes international

Increase in the
number of hotels
What really stands out is the increase in new hotels which points
to needed demand. I drive into the city regular and see the Oriental hotel in
Palo is open again with repairs still ongoing. The new hotels are smaller but
many of them appear very well presented from the exterior. New hotels being
built means more visitors to the city. This is good for Tacloban. More
visitors, more spending points to a growing economy. Most important is the
creation of employment and an improved standard of living.
Basic housing be
erected
Homes are being built by charity groups. In my area these
types of homes in the picture below are being erected in significant numbers in
outlying areas. They are a Philippine style barangay home with an iron roof.
You can see the people happy. They have somewhere to live and raise their
families. A place to call home.
Shopping centers
Robinsons Mall is one of the main shopping complexes and has
opened there extension in the last few months. This complex is quite large with
a movie theater, supermarket, variety stores and many places to eat. Other
shopping centers down town are Gaisano Mall and Save more. Some of these stores
sell imported foods.
Attractions in
Tacloban
The sites to visit in Tacloban City are well documented
including: San Juanico Bridge ( linking the islands of Leyte and Samar), Nino
Shrine, MacArthur Memorial Park Landing (Palo). Leyte Island. It can be
exciting and interesting to just explore the city.
In future blogs we will go into more detail on the
attractions and places to visit.

Transportation within
the city is not too expensive
The cost to hire a van or car can be expensive for some
people. The transport around Tacloban is not too expensive. A trike can cost
you 8 peso (20 cents) per person to get to most areas in the city. The other
form of transport is the multicab which can be described as a small bus or
people carrier. For the foreigner it may not be that comfortable to travel like
this but you can put it down to experiencing the way of life here. We can put
in another way “when in Rome do as the
Romans do!”

Tacloban a great
place to visit
Hotels and restaurants can be checked on Trip Advisor and
other websites. The main thing is Tacloban city is worth a visit and it is not
too expensive. There is plenty of sites to see, the people are friendly
